The situation
Casey Basketball Association runs training and development for young athletes. When lockdowns hit, two things broke at once:
- Training stopped, cutting the social connection that supports young athletes' wellbeing.
- Revenue was at risk — with no training, membership fees (and the staff they fund) were on the line.
The question wasn't "can we run a Zoom" — it was how do you keep a whole club engaged, and financially intact, when connection is tested?
What I built
A complete digital training platform, delivered as a 4-week MVP and grown through ongoing yearly enhancements and expansion across the organisation over the last five years. Built to be usable by athletes aged 8+ while keeping admin light, in three connected parts:
- Back-office management — a central web system for staff to manage teams, schedule sessions and review video.
- Parent portal — so guardians can see schedules and monitor content.
- Athlete portal & app — live sessions, video resources and feedback notifications, in an app young athletes can actually use.
Built agile, integrating the pieces that made it real: payment processing (to protect membership income), Zoom for live coaching, and AWS for media processing.
The result
of athletes engaged through lockdowns
- Membership fees retained — letting the club keep key staff when many organisations couldn't.
- Record 2022 season — nine teams qualified for the Victorian Championship, an organisational record.
- Record number of athletes selected for the State Development Program.
- Still in use five years on — the platform evolved and ran the club's 2025/2026 team trials.
Why it matters
Bespoke software built for how a sporting organisation actually runs — not an off-the-shelf app. It solved an existential problem under real time pressure, then kept earning its place: five years of expansion across the organisation, still running today.
